Metabolic Flexibility: My One-Year Journey with Lumen

In our "Always-On" world, we spend a lot of time talking about mental burnout, but we rarely talk about metabolic burnout. For the last year, I’ve been road-testing a piece of technology called Lumen to see if it earns a spot in the Eos "Vetted" wall of fame.
As as integrative mental health counselors, I wanted to find a tool that helps people take the guesswork out of weight loss, muscle gain, and energy management. Here is what I’ve learned after 12 months of breathing into it.

What is Lumen?
Lumen is a handheld device that measures your Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER). By analyzing the concentration of CO2 in your breath, it tells you in real-time whether your body is currently burning carbohydrates or fats for fuel.
The goal is Metabolic Flexibility—the ability of your body to efficiently switch between fuel sources based on what you’ve eaten and how you’re moving.
Fasting, Autoimmune Health, and the "Window" Trap
Having an autoimmune disorder (Thanks Sjogrens!), I’ve always known that intermittent fasting can be a powerful tool to reduce flares and lower systemic inflammation. But, like many
of you, I struggled with it for years. Thanks to the data from Lumen, I finally realized why:
The Quality Gap: I learned that when you don't eat the right foods (avoiding those hidden vegetable oils, refined sugars and inflammatory additives), your body simply doesn't work the way it’s meant to. You can’t reach a "fat-burning" state if your system is bogged down by poor-quality fuel.
The Wrong Window: I wasn't fasting for the appropriate amount of time for my specific biology. Lumen showed me exactly when my body actually shifted into a fasted state. Sometimes we think we are "fasting," but our metabolism is still processing the pizza and drinks from the night before.
The Results: Does it actually work?
The short answer is yes. When I used the device consistently and followed the app's nutritional "macros" for the day, the results were predictable and steady:
Initial Drop: I lost 8 lbs right off the bat.
Steady Progress: I found that if I followed the data, I could consistently lose 1–2 lbs per week.
The "Addictive" Accountability: The app provides a "Lumen Level" every morning. For someone who likes data, that score becomes a powerful (and slightly addicting) accountability partner. Although I did consistently forget to take my bedtime score (whoops).

The inconsistency is alarming and totally predictable (for me)
The Reality Check: Momentum vs. Life
While the tech is impressive, I have to be realistic about the "momentum" factor. This isn't a fault of the device, but a reality of the working parent.
When life gets busy—kids, business, the house—it is very easy to revert to old eating schedules and stop "measuring." I found that for a healthy, fit person looking to maintain weight or build muscle, the device is a helpful tool, but it requires a commitment to the habit. If you aren't a "data person," it might just become an expensive paperweight.
The Future: Ketones and Integration
I thought I saw a new versions that measure ketones alongside CO2--although for the life of me I can't find it now (maybe a dream). For those of us working on deep cellular health and neuro-recovery, having that extra layer of data could be the "push" needed to stay consistent during the busy seasons of life.
The Eos Recommendation
Is Lumen necessary? No. Is it earth-shattering? Maybe not. But is it a valuable piece of "Hardware" for your recovery? For the right person, it probably is.
My Final Take: If you are someone who thrives on data and needs a clear "map" for your nutrition, Lumen is a fantastic investment. It helps you understand the why behind your energy levels and weight fluctuations. However, know yourself—if more data is going to hinder you or feel like a chore, stick to the basics of Real Whole Food, proteins and fibers.
At Eos, we’re about Operational Resilience. Sometimes that means using high-tech tools to find your path, and sometimes it means just getting back to the sunlight and the basics.
